ERA Chair Holder of TIREX Prof. Caner Süsal was invited to give a talk at the Annual Meeting of Eurotransplant. The event was held in the Netherland’s Sassenheim and brought together experts who discussed the critical topics and recent developments in allocation and transplantation of organs. Prof. Süsal was asked to present a project of TIREX dealing with the production of pancreatic beta cells. In this new approach to the therapy of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, donor’s beta cells, to prevent their rejection, are made unrecognizable for the patient’s immune system through a genetic manipulation process known as HLA silencing.
